In a process you might call “Part to Art,” collaborators Albert Paley, renowned sculpture artist, and Jesse James, famed West Coast Chopper personality, used their talents to create two metal sculptures, each of which resembles a collage of metal parts. In a collaborative process, Paley and James each began creating one of the sculptures, then traded the sculptures, each of which was finished by the other artist. The sculptures will be auctioned by Wright Auction House in Chicago, with proceeds benefiting the five FABTECH co-sponsors—AWS, FMA, SME, PMA, and CCAI—in order to support grants and educational opportunities for the metalworking trades.

Dandelion Post (423 Telegraph Ave.) features two rooms of clothing and accessories with an emphasis on textile work. // Mind’s Eye Vintage (484 49th St.) stocks excellent-quality vintage for men and women, which could include Pendleton flannels, polished-to-perfection wingtip creepers, or supersoft band tees. // If your typical farmers market tote is leaving you feeling "blah," Temescal Alley’s Baggu (470G 49th St.) has the remedy. // Chances are you’ve pined over minimalist modern staples from Ali Golden (482B 49th St.), and her Temescal Alley studio is where you can not only try on the raw silk jumpers and breezy tunics, but also find the odd experimental piece at a discount. // Standard and Strange (5010 Telegraph Ave.) highlights expertly crafted menswear and denim. // Esqueleto (482A 49th St.) translates to "skeleton," but there’s nothing bare bones about the jewelry, artwork, and other pieces Lauren Wolf crafts and showcases at her shop. // Temescal Alley also houses boutique jewelry maker Marisa Mason (484D 49th St.), who you can often find in her studio crafting handmade earrings, bracelets, and necklaces with a bohemian feel. // Part retail shop, part work space, Claflin, Thayer, and Co. (470E 49th St.) specializes in leather jackets and bags made in shop. // Sniff your way through the walls of fragrant tinctures and dried botanicals and spices at Homestead Apothecary (486 29th St.), where you can purchase everything from mushroom-infused coffee to natural deodorants to crystals. // Aside from an enviable selection of succulents, terrariums, and planters, Crimson Horticultural Rarities (470 49th St.) also offers classes.
While we probably won’t see PLA troops carrying blasters or phasers on the battlefield any time soon, such advances in Chinese military technology point to another area where science fiction will become battlefield reality in the 21st century. Combined with an evident willingness to envision the use of use of laser weapons in tactical situations, the availability of such new weaponry makes it probable that Chinese soldiers, systems and vehicles could carry lasers for a wide range of missions in the future.
“Anti-blackness is built into the ethos of this country. There’s something wrong with that and we need to deconstruct it. I think, specifically, in America, there’s such a deep history that is not often acknowledged, but instead swept under the rug because it makes white people uncomfortable. The reason there are black people in this country is directly because we were brought here against our will, as a disposable commodity. Slavery socialized white people to perceive our value as less than their own. When you think about the black body in America and the timeline of our existence here, you realize that it’s only been about 100 years that our humanity is vaguely recognized. Our history in America is riddled with violence. So, the simple idea of compensating us in the same way our white counterpart is compensated, in fashion or in any industry — that’s a little bit of a stretch. The context of the conversation should be one of social reform where black people get to experience true liberation in the exact way the white American gets to experience their freedom. Our time is now.”—Ethan Miller, agent, IMG Models NY
