SS2 will then return to Earth, offering the experience of the return of gravity (g-force) and high heat on re-entry to the Earth’s atmosphere. All aboard will be protected from high temperatures as the spaceship decelerates through the atmosphere by proven thermal protection, originally developed by NASA for the Space Shuttle (Fig. 4 and Step 9).

The the material itself is intriguing, and I immediately had practical questions like what is this stuff? What is it good for? How is it made? And is it really aluminum rendered transparent by some science fiction process?
